B2B podcast advertising comes with a built-in assumption: If you’re selling to businesses, you should advertise on business podcasts. But is it true? To separate the leads from the sales, we turned to ORBIT.

ORBIT (the Oxford Road Benchmark Intelligence Tool) isolates performance using actual campaign data representing over $2 billion in advertiser spend. ORBIT doesn’t care about vanity metrics; it only highlights the inventory that actually converts for advertisers.

September 2026 ORBIT Insights

It turns out B2B success goes far beyond the business genre. In fact, in our analysis of the best-performing podcasts for B2B advertisers, only three business-focused podcasts made the cut, and all of them landed outside the top five. Meanwhile, we saw multiple winners in the comedy, technology, and society & culture categories (even the philosophy category made the list).

We’re not telling you to avoid business shows for B2B. Instead, this is a reminder that B2B is a buyer classification, not a content strategy. Genre helps dictate which shows you should investigate. But ORBIT tells you which shows are actually earning the buy. Let’s tune out the noise and get to the B2B insights that will help you boost ROI ASAP.

• B2B Winners Know No Bounds: B2B performance isn’t about genre. Our top 15 shows span eight categories, including comedy, true crime, and society & culture. The takeaway: You won’t know if a show works for B2B by looking at the genre. Genre fit is a reasonable starting point, and business shows definitely have a place in a B2B campaign (see below). Just don’t stop there: Move to proven shows when building your actual media plan. Buying every show in a genre is less efficient than buying the right shows.

• Business is a Shortlist, not a Shortcut: Yes, B2B and the business podcast genre share a word. That doesn’t mean B2B advertisers should run exclusively on business shows. We clocked three winners in the business category, but overall, the genre performs below our average. ORBIT’s advice is to pick a few recommended winners in business, then diversify. Remember: Your customers listen to all kinds of shows. Concentrating spend in a crowded genre (with other B2B buyers) hurts your campaign.

• Tech on Top: There’s a parallel story for the technology genre. Three programs, all in the top five of the ranker, demonstrate that while the genre can work for B2B, it’s not a sure bet (and in fact, the technology genre is only slightly above average for B2B). Marketers: Our advice is to stay curious about tech shows, but to use ORBIT to narrow the field to a few cutting-edge shows.

• Breaking News: Surprise Genre Nabs Top Spot:The #1 and #11 shows on our ranker are news programs. B2B brands that blacklist the news category do so at their own peril. For marketers armed with ORBIT, the smart play is to buy the best and skip the rest.

How ORBIT Works (And Why It’s A Metric That Matters)

ORBIT normalizes performance across different advertiser goals, whether that’s target CAC, desired ROAS, or cost per qualified lead. This allows direct comparison across campaign types, something download-based rankings can’t provide.

The difference: Many tracking tools tell you who’s advertising and estimate spend, count ad occurrences, or measure downloads and reach.

ORBIT shows which podcasts made money and which ones didn’t.

We factor in what advertisers paid, what they were trying to achieve, how it was measured– including survey-based attribution data–and whether the investment delivered ROI. That’s the difference between counting impressions and measuring profit.

Our methodology:

  • Minimum 3 distinct advertisers per show
  • Minimum 3 paid drops per advertiser
  • At least 50% of placements must exceed advertiser goals
  • A 12-month rolling analysis updated monthly
  • Attribution-normalized across pixels, codes, URLs, and modeling

For Advertisers

Here’s how ORBIT can help you eliminate guesswork from podcast planning:

  • De-risk initial buys by seeing which shows have proven track records with similar advertisers.
  • Optimize faster with normalized performance data across attribution models.
  • Find hidden gems before they become expensive tier-1 shows.
  • Break category assumptions with data that shows where your customers actually listen.
  • Scale with confidence, knowing which placements consistently deliver ROI.

The era of buying podcast ads based on download numbers is over. ORBIT shows you which shows drive performance before you spend a dollar.
